Friday January 1 Killington Another frigid day where I skied sparingly. Hit the mountain at crack 'o noon and established radio contact with Jim Wads and Dave & Donna Morin and skied a few with them.
Saturday January 2 Killington Wow. Superstar was velvet whoop-dee-doos top to bottom. Skied zillions of runs on it with Dave Morin and Wayne Wagner. It was frigid so I was doing the 4 runs and then thaw at Mahogany Ridge cycle.
Sunday January 3 Killington Everybody left fearing an ice storm and it snowed/sleeted all day. 5 or 6 inches of mixed snow/sleet fell during the day. Early runs on Superstar were wildly difficult due to the flat light on the upper headwall. Total vertigo conditions. Poached Escapade many times with Hag Man and Dan Rigger. Went over to Snowdon to poach Northstar and Vagabond but both were open already. Vagabond was almost untracked and was great. Northstar tracked out by 3:30.
Monday January 4 Killington Skied with Hag Man and Dan Rigger. Some warm stuff froze up the bump trails so Superstar and Panic Button were rock hard. Many runs on West Glade and all the groomed cruisers.
Tuesday January 5 Killington Oops. Left the boots in the boot bag. Late start and hit the mountain at noon. Ran into Jim Rich and the retiree gang. Skied a bunch on main mountain on Escapade/Cascade, West Glade to East Fall, Northstar, and Bunny Buster to Mouse Trap.
Wednesday January 6 Killington Hit the mountain early and skied main mountain again on the three decent natural snow trails plus Vagabond. Ran into the retiree gang at lunch and did a repeat all afternoon.
Thursday January 7 Killington Killer day! Started with a cruiser down groomed Superstar. Then Skyehawk headwall in windblown and breakable crust to Skyelark under the guns with no tracks on it yet. Off the back side cruising Bear Claw. 7 runs on a freshly blown Outer Limits. Skied most of this with the retiree gang but ran into Jim Constantine and did my last OL run with him. Then Cruise Control and a Skyelark under the guns back to KBL for lunch. Finished with another Skyehawk headwall to Skyelark and a couple of Escapade/Cascade runs.
Friday January 8 Killington Skied with Bob the Dentist, Dick the Dentist, and Barbara Dean in the morning cruising one or two each from Superstar over towards Bear. Did 3 OL runs with the third with Jan Lavoie after a break. The 3rd run was my worst herb run of the year. 207s in tight bumps is a tad tough and I was longing for my all mountain boards. Finished up doing a Superstar, Escapade/Cascade, East Glade, West Glade to Snowdon with Jan.
Sunday January 10 Killington 8-10 Friday night, 1 inch of rain Saturday am, 10-12 Saturday afternoon. Nothing but natural snow trails all day. Started with Rick & Donna Delpo on Escapade, Catwalk, Royal Flush, West Glade, Highline, Interceptor, Conclusion, Chute, Great Bear to bottom of Low Rider, Northstar, Vagabond to lower Patty's Panties. Met up with Peter Flink, Donna Morin and did more Snowdon runs. To the Peak for a quick bar break with Jim Wadhams and Dave Morin. Closed the day with Ovation poaching lower, Vertigo, Upper Needles Eye, Thimble. Major face plant on Conclusion when I skied into a huge snowcat chunk.
Tuesday January 12 Killington 4" of new snow. Did Southridge explorations from the K1 starting on Catwalk and upper Escapade. Light ski day since my knees are a little sore.
Wednesday January 13 Killington Another powder day with 6-8". Started on Snowdon with lots of runs on Chute/Great Bear, Northstar, Vagabond, and Low Rider. Did the South Ridge loop again a few times starting at Catwalk, down Jug, to Breakaway or Jug Handle. Did Thimble to Lower Vertigo and Upper Needles Eye to Vertigo on my way back. Vertigo was awesome all day.
Saturday January 16 Steamboat 48 hours of travel hell. Bradley Field in Hartford was closed on Friday due to an ice storm. At 3:00, the flight finally cancelled and I ended up flying Saturday out of Boston. Flew First Class and got to the condo by 1:30. At 2:15, I was in season pass jail because my season pass didn't scan. Managed to get to the top of the mountain by 3:00 and caught a run on Two O'Clock in 5 inches of powder and then skied a couple on the lower mountain till the lower lifts stopped spinning at 4:00.
Sunday January 17 Steamboat 10" of powder. First run was untracked in the woods between Shadows and Closet trying to find Shadows. High winds so they closed the high speed quads at 9:30. Skied the morning off the Four Points lift. Ended up taking the Bar-Ue and dropping off the back side. At the very top of the mountain, it was subzero and blowing about 40 with visibility of about zero coming down the ridge line. Ended up quitting early with frostbitten toes.
Monday January 18 Steamboat 5" of powder. Skied mostly off the Sundown Express quad with a bunch of runs on Shadows. Skied all the O'Clock runs. Also discovered Rolex coming down off the Rendezvous Saddle.
Tuesday January 19 Steamboat 10" of powder. Dropped the day pack at Rendezvous Saddle and caught first tracks on Rolex. Then several on Shadows and worked my way around to Storm Peak where I explored the chutes off Mt. Werner. Met up with a local named Barbara and a few friends she was showing around from Dallas on Flying Z. Ended up doing a few Ridge or Chute 1 to Flying Z to Vortex runs. Hit Rendezvous Saddle for a late lunch. Dropped down Rolex and followed up with a couple of great Sundown liftline runs.
Wednesday January 20 Steamboat 3" of powder and some afternoon sunshine. John O'Hara's first day of the year his first time on X-Mountains. Started off on groomers off the Sundown Express quad and Storm Peak. Did a Shadows, a Ridge to Flying Z, and rock danced down Pioneer Ridge.
Thursday January 21 Steamboat Snowed all day with maybe 10" by the end of the day. Mostly did the o'clock runs, Rolex, and couple of Shadows with Rick Delpo and John O'Hara.
Friday January 22 Steamboat 18" of fresh powder. 6 memorable runs down Shadows with Rick Delpo and John O'Hara. Point 'em and go in the trees. The absolute best day of the year so far with everything incredibly soft.
Saturday January 23 Steamboat Sunny day with tons of soft snow. Did a couple of Ridge to Flying Z to Vortex runs, Storm Peak, several on Shadows and Closet, the Sundown Liftline, and some O'Clock runs.
Sunday January 24 Steamboat 3" of powder and cloudy again. Skied a la-la day with Rick Delpo and got off the mountain by 12:30. Other than one run on Shadows traversing out to avoid the last steep part, we stuck to the groomed flats. Legs are totally trashed so this was a welcome relief.
Thursday January 28 Killington A very short day. Decided to take several days off to rest the knees. Good snow on the hill with 4 inches of natural stuff on top of resurfaced trails. I stuck to the Canyon area.
Friday January 29 Mt. Snow My first day there in a long time. Drove down with Patty G to discover about 10" of fresh, light powder. Skied just about everything on the mountain and poached quite a bit. With only 10" over rock hard stuff, the relative flatness of Mt. Snow made for some nice floating turns with little bottoming out. Nice relaxing day. My frigging ASC pass didn't scan again.
Sunday January 31 Killington Skied all day with Dave & Donna Morin. Early morning runs in the canyon. Several around Needles Eye with some good bump runs. Jug/Jug Handle to Back Behind for a cocktail. Caught the Skyeship at Needles Eye for a last ride at 4:00.
